hss: community projects

We like good causes and we like to help out wherever we can. As well as a discount on all hires for registered charities, our teams often get out and about to lend a hand. You’ll find details of some of the community and charitable work we’ve been involved in here:

Nettlebed 2011
After our help previously was so well received, our team of HSS Heroes went back to the Sue Ryder Hospice at Nettlebed. Our Heroes were kept duly busy on the three day tidy-up project. They sanded and painted and transformed the exterior window frames and generally left the Hospice looking much nicer.

Heywood Petting Centre
Rochdale Council recently organised a project
to build a petting centre in Heywood as a source of therapy
for people with mental illnesses. A team of Heroes from two of our Head Office locations in Manchester went along and helped to erect chicken wire animal pens, build 2 flat packed animal houses, construct a large shed and flag the penned areas.

Guinness Northern Counties
Guinness Northern Counties organise a huge community project every year called ‘Making a Difference’.
We went along to help ‘make a difference’ at a local community centre in Sheffield that provides everything from computer classes, drama and youth clubs to boxercise and football.
Our team of heroes got stuck in cleaning, painting and gardening.

Rock Foundation
Rock Foundation is an organisation based in Grimsby that works with and supports people with learning disabilities. Our team of Heroes went along and spent the day cleaning carpets, painting rooms and tiling the kitchen in order
to provide a clean and tidy space for people to go.

Urmston Primary School
Our team of HSS Heroes went along to a local Primary School in Urmston to help create an outdoor learning, nature and reflection area for the pupils. They dug out a pathway and created areas for seating and animal hotels as well as pruning the nearby trees and clearing the rubbish before tending the allotment ready for the children to plant vegetables.

Sue Ryder Hospice
A team of Heroes helped with a 3 day refurbishment project at a Sue Ryder Hospice in Nettlebed.
They got stuck in fixing up and painting their furniture storage areas as well as their sale space which generates tens of thousands of pounds a year.

St Chad’s Primary School
Our Heroes of Hire helped to transform a derelict waste ground into a haven for wildlife, ready for the children of St Chad’s Primary School in Dudley to install their butterfly garden, flower meadow and insect hotel.

103 mile cycle ride
A team of cycling Heroes from one of our Manchester Head Office locations took to the saddle and completed a 103 mile cycle ride which took 33 hours and
raised over £1200 for charity.

British 10K Run
A team of Heroes from around the country put their best foot forward to complete the British 10K Run and raising almost £3,000 in aid of our East London charity partner City Gateway to help disadvantaged young people in Tower Hamlets.

Kayley’s Garden
We helped to transform a little girl’s garden –
a debilitating illness means she’s on a stomach pump for much of the day and can’t run around so all she wanted was a safe place to sit and read. Our team of Heroes all got stuck in and transformed Kayley’s garden with a decking area and patio that fitted the bill perfectly.

City Gateway 2
Our commitment to the City Gateway project in London’s East End continued with another team of heroes rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck in. HSS’ers from various branches around London spent a couple of busy days painting, sanding, building and fixing.

City Gateway
CEO Chris Davies led a team of HSS Heroes
on an employee volunteering project at City Gateway, a charity that engages and mentors members of the disadvantaged
Tower Hamlets community. They knocked down walls, painted and carpeted training rooms and built desks. It is hoped that
the improved facilities will help encourage more Tower Hamlet residents to take advantage of the courses on offer.

HSS Kingston
HSS Kingston showed their caring side, helping designers at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show with some of the equipment they needed to create this beautiful garden on behalf of the charity, The Samaritans. The garden, entitled Samaritans Breathing Space….Thinking Place, was designed by Wendy Allen and Catherine Kenny who said ‘many thanks for your kind support – we were awarded a bronze flora medal which is a great outcome for a first show garden!’

Dudley the Donkey
Poorly Dudley the Donkey needed some help
to stand upright to ensure his recovery and the team at HSS Grangemouth were asked if they could think of any way to help. Luckily, the team came to the rescue with a clever tripod gantry and chain hoist combination to keep Dudley on all fours. Dudley is now doing well and has been reunited with his best pal Otis.

HSS DONATIONS TO BOOTS FOR AFRICA
In the spirit of the World Cup, HSS branches are collecting second hand football boots that will then be sent to various children's projects in Africa as part of the Boots for Africa campaign, aimed at helping to build the skills and fitness of disadvantaged young people through football. You can donate your old (but clean!) boots at any branch of HSS.

A SPRINT FOR SPORT’S RELIEF
